Urgent Care of Southbury Sponsors "Survive the Drive" at Pomperaug High School

SOUTHBURY — Urgent Care of Southbury sponsored "SurvivetheDrive" Monday January, 21st at Pomperaug High School. SurvivetheDrive is a Connecticut-based national driver safety program designed to educate drivers of all ages about how to avoid catastrophic, life-changing mistakes resulting from driver error. The event was coordinated for Urgent Care of Southbury by local resident Dr. Lisa M. Vieira.

The program at Pomperaug High School was hosted by nationally known presenter Bob Green, a driving enthusiast and motor sports race car driving instructor. Green says that teens are particularly vulnerable to driver error due to inexperience and immaturity. In his presentation to PHS students, Green educated young drivers and soon-to-be drivers about what he calls "Driving While Oblivious (DWO), which removes conscious understanding while operating heavy, moving equipment. Driver error occurs in 93% of all crashes due to DWO, which includes texting, reading, drinking, phoning and any activities that distract teens from conscious understanding while driving."

Urgent Care of Southbury physician owner Bernd G. Woerner, M.D. said, "It is tragic to witness the injury or death of a teen due to driver error. Motor vehicle injuries continue to be the leading cause of death in teens. It is particularly satisfying to help educate teens in an attempt to change that statistic."

The locations in Southbury, Brookfield, Norwalk, and Ridgefield are open 365 days a year from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays.
